John Pomfret is an internationally renowned expert on US-China relations. He was one of the first American students to study in China after the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1979. He was briefly expelled from China after the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, for alleged associations with student protest leaders. He was later welcomed back and served as the Beijing bureau chief of The Washington Post.
Mr. Pomfret is the author of The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present (2016), which won the 2017 Arthur Ross Book Award from the US Council on Foreign Relations.
As US-China relations continue to deteriorate, what can we learn from history in order to better negotiate this most consequential bilateral relationship?
